The
Locality around Bellavista
 |
|
|
Just across the road from Bellavista is a
children's adventure playground with slides,
swings and a "castle" with tunnels, ladders and
slides. This children's playground forms part of
a promenade embellished with trees, a fountain
and
four gazebos wherein one can sit in the
shade or take a picnic lunch! The sea is on the
other side of the promenade - roughly 30 metres
from Bellavista. The sea-air is incredible and
the view is uninterrupted to the horizon and
beyond.
At one end of the promenade is the car-park
-just 120 metres from Bellavista. Although you
can park your car on the left hand side of the
road, there usually is no parking place free, so
it is suggested that you park your vehicle here.
Within 500 metres from Bellavista are two
sandy bays: Qbajjar on the left hand side and the main bay of
Marsalforn on the right (just beyond the car
park). Both bays are popular with tourists
and therefore there are plenty of restaurants
and other facilities including dive-shops and
internet cafes.
Qbajjar is famous for its Battery and the
salt-pans. The battery was built by the Knights
of St. John in 1792 on the promontery to guard
the bay from invasion - now it is used as a
restaurant and disco. The promontery's tip is
covered with salt pans - hand carved hundreds of
years ago and which are still in use today.
|
|
|
|
|
|
| The
pans are filled up with sea-water which then
evaporates leaving behind the sea-salt
that is harvested and sold. A
few meters away from Qbajjar, on the other side of
the Knight's Battery, is another quaint
bay: Xwejni. In summer you may often meet horse
owners who take their horses to bathe in this bay!
